Pre-and post op counseling re vasectomy - 4/21/2005 The epididymis is an 18 foot single coiled tube in back of the testis. After successful blockade the spermatozoa back up this tube until they reach the first portion where the 45 cc's of water the testis makes is largely reabsorbed. Their chemistry is that of hair, i.e. disulfide bonds. The testis then experiences back pressure. Blood flow shifts and spermatozoa production diminishes to that which can be reabsorbed by the various 'holes' the epididymis caused by back pressure. 10 years later the testis is smaller and softer. The epididymis may have hard nodules at the cauda, the storage portion just before the vas. Picture below shows an epididymis 10 years after ligation.
